Nature & the Immune System

Spending time outdoors increases the diversity in our gut microbiome. It helps transition our sympathetic nervous system from “fight or flight” mode to our parasympathetic nervous system so it can “rest and digest,” and it even increases our natural killer cells which help us fight viral infections.

Gut Diversity + its Importance

When we are in nature, we are exposed to a variety of life including plant, animal, microbial and fungal life. This exposure increases the diversity in our gut bacteria. This diversity in our microbiome allows us to maintain homeostasis within our immune system and therefore avoid an immune response overreaction. These efforts are even more important now as we are less prone to this diversity due to smaller family sizes, increased antibiotic use, lower exposure to food bacteria, increased hygiene, and less time in natural environments. Research shows that we can experience these benefits in as little time as 2 hours each week in nature.

Reconnect with Nature

Not only do we inhale the essential nutrients that contribute to our healing and positive health, but we also absorb them. To do this, we need to experience direct contact with the Earth. This experience is known as ‘Grounding’ or ‘Earthing.’ When we make this connection, we make contact with the Earth’s electrons. In doing this, we are lessening inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation can be a cause and a result of an abnormal immune response. In practice, this could simply be walking in the grass barefoot, or laying down on a good day.

Mindfulness

Being mindful brings us to the present moment, which can reduce anxiety, stress, negative emotions, and depression. Mindfulness in practice allows us to feel more connected to our surroundings. To experience this, when you are in nature, become present internally with something very small, such as your breath or your heart beat. Focus, without judgment or elaboration. Next, you can switch to an aspect of your surroundings, the color of the trees for example. Keep it simple. If you so choose, you can practice using a guided walking meditation. When we put our bodies in a more peaceful state, we have an increased ability to heal and bring more joy into our lives.

Enjoy the beauty of the world that surrounds you!
